About
Freethinker: (noun) One who has rejected authority and dogma in favor of rational inquiry and speculation.
Students for Freethought is a student organization at The Ohio State University that is dedicated to promoting and practicing the open, rational, and scientific examination of the universe and our place in it. We also seek to demonstrate, by argument and action, that it is possible to lead a good and meaningful life without religion, and that ethics and morality can be meaningfully based on rational and humanistic ideals and values.
We hold skepticism and critical thought as a very high value, using it frequently to evaluate the world around us, questioning everything. We question culture, religion, psychics, authority, science – everything! Just check out some of our past meeting topics to get a better idea.
We like to think of ourselves as a haven for atheists, agnostics, skeptics, and humanists. But we encourage all members of the Ohio State University community to participate with us to these ends. Or to just swing by to see what we’re about.
So what do we do?
Discussion
We hold weekly meetings every Thursday at 7:30pm. Sometimes we have round table discussions, discussions after a movie, host speakers, have panel discussions, and socials. Topics include everything from culture, religion, psychics, homeopathy, authority, science – everything! Nothing’s off-limits to our discussions or questioning!
Activism
In the past we’ve done marches, written letters, and had demonstrations on campus. Most issues we’ve addressed have been separation of church and state, free speech, and human rights.
Cooperation
We have an incredibly diverse campus. Lets face it – we’re not going to agree with everyone, however, we build bridges where we can. We work with different cultural and religious groups both on and off campus.
Volunteer Work
We also do volunteer work. In the past we’ve done blood drives, AIDS walks, Toys for Tots, and even gone down to New Orleans to build homes with a local Christian campus Group, The Thomas Society.
Community
We’re not all work! We hold weekly socials, go camping, play lazer tag, have potlucks, parties, and much more! Join our Facebook group and mailing list for more info.
